KIRS ENGAGES KANO BUSINESSES ON TAX LAWS AND COMPLIANCE AT SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIALIST CONFERENCE IN KANO
The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) on Saturday, 19th September, 2026, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting tax awareness and compliance among small and medium-sized businesses in Kano State.
The Service made this known during a stakeholders’ conference organised by the Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Kano State Chapter, in collaboration with the Kano State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (KASMEDA) and Stanbic IBTC.
The conference, themed “Driving Enterprise, Unlocking Investment, Transforming Kano,” brought together business operators, government institutions, financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders to discuss challenges confronting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and identify practical measures to build a strong, sustainable and competitive business environment in Kano State.
Representing KIRS at the conference, the Executive Director, Compliance and Enforcement Group, Mallam Muhammad Abba Aliyu, addressed participants on tax laws, obligations and compliance requirements for businesses.
Mallam Muhammad Abba Aliyu explained the meaning and various types of taxes, persons liable to pay taxes, as well as applicable exemptions. He also took participants through the procedures for tax registration and filing of tax returns.
He stressed the importance of timely compliance with tax obligations, noting that penalties may apply where taxpayers fail to register or file their returns as required by law.
The Executive Director appreciated the Chairman of NASSI, Kano State Chapter, Alhaji Aminu Kurawa, for providing KIRS with the opportunity to engage directly with business operators on tax-related matters. He also commended the cordial relationship between KIRS and NASSI in Kano State.
Earlier, the Chairman of NASSI, Kano State Chapter, Alhaji Aminu Kurawa said the conference provided an important platform for business operators, government institutions and other stakeholders to deliberate on challenges affecting the growth and sustainability of SMEs in the state.
Alhaji Kurawa appreciated KIRS for their participation in the conference as he said knowledge of taxation and its obligations is a necessity for all small scale business looking to strive and contribute to the development of Kano State.
The conference provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views on taxation, access to finance, infrastructure and other factors affecting the growth of businesses, with emphasis on creating an enabling environment for enterprise development and investment in Kano State.
