39 PROJECTS TO BE COMMISSIONED AS AKWA IBOM MARKS 39TH ANNIVERSARY

No fewer than 39 projects executed by the Governor Umo Eno-led administration will be commissioned across Akwa Ibom State as part of activities marking the 39th anniversary of the creation of the state.

The projects, which cut across critical sectors including road infrastructure, healthcare, education and tourism, include the ARISE Palm Resort on Brooks Street and several other strategic projects undertaken to enhance infrastructure and improve the quality of life of residents.

Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, disclosed this on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a ministerial press briefing held at the Government House Press Centre, Uyo.

Umanah, who addressed the briefing alongside the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John; the Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerette Udoh; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Akparawa James Edet; and media aides to the Governor, said the commissioning of the projects would take place from September 1 to September 30, 2026.

He further disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is expected to visit the state as a special guest of honour during the anniversary celebrations and will perform the unveiling of some of the projects.

According to the Information Commissioner, the anniversary programme will also feature a special state inter-denominational thanksgiving service scheduled for September 20, 2026, at the International Christian Worship Centre, Banking Layout, off Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.

He hinted that a State Banquet would hold at the ARISE Palm Resort on September 23, 2026, to commemorate the date Akwa Ibom State was created out of the former Cross River State in 1987.

Umanah said the Governor Umo Eno administration had continued to pursue a people-centred development philosophy, with deliberate interventions aimed at improving the welfare and living conditions of Akwa Ibom people. He also disclosed that the administration had so far cleared ₦90.6 billion out of the ₦111 billion gratuity liability inherited by the Governor, assuring pensioners that the remaining balance would be cleared by the administration.

The Commissioner appealed to pensioners to remain patient and assured them of the administration’s commitment to settling the outstanding obligations.

Also speaking at the briefing, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, highlighted major reforms and investments undertaken by the Governor Umo Eno-led administration to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.

Dr. John said the administration had made deliberate investments to build a resilient, accessible and affordable healthcare system for the people of Akwa Ibom, adding that the reforms had also strengthened accountability in the health sector.
“We now have increased accountability within the health sector.”

The Commissioner disclosed that the Airport Medical Centre at the Victor Attah International Airport is among the healthcare projects scheduled for commissioning during the anniversary celebrations.

He listed other achievements in the sector to include the construction, remodelling and equipping of several general hospitals across the state, including facilities in Ukanafun and Ikot Ekpene, as well as investments in primary healthcare facilities.

According to him, the state government has also established three medical oxygen production plants across the three senatorial districts, located in Ikot Ekpene, Uyo and Eket, respectively. He explained that the initiative had expanded the state’s capacity to provide critical support for emergency medical services and improved access to essential healthcare infrastructure.

The Health Commissioner further highlighted the state government’s investment in emergency medical services as part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure that residents have access to timely and quality medical care.
