FG EXPANDS MONITORING COMMITTEE TO ENSURE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF UNION AGREEMENTS, SUSTAIN INDUSTRIAL HARMONY
The Federal Government has expanded the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to ensure timely implementation of agreements with organised labour across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The initiative, led by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, seeks to strengthen accountability, resolve labour issues and protect teaching, learning and research in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja on Wednesday, Dr. Alausa said effective implementation required sustained oversight, accountability and prompt resolution of outstanding commitments. He attributed agreements negotiated with 16 labour unions within approximately one year to a consolidated negotiation structure that improved coordination and institutional memory.
The expanded committee will track government commitments, identify implementation bottlenecks and refer unresolved matters to relevant authorities. It will bring together the Federal Ministries of Education, Labour and Employment, Justice, and Finance, alongside relevant agencies.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, urged stakeholders to embrace constructive dialogue and shared responsibility.
IMC Chairman, Senator Olarewaju Tejuoso, announced plans for five standing Sectoral Implementation Monitoring Committees to address sector-specific concerns and monitor agreed commitments.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to stronger labour relations, uninterrupted academic activities and a stable, productive tertiary education system.
