EFCC, NJI SEEK LEGAL REFORMS TO FAST-TRACK CORRUPTION TRIALS
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) have called for legal and procedural reforms to address delays in the trial of corruption and other economic and financial crimes cases.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 8th Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges, held in Abuja.
The workshop organised by the EFCC in collaboration with the NJI, was themed, “Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Financial Crimes in a Digital Age.”
It brought together justices and judges from across the country, as well as EFCC investigators and prosecutors, to discuss ways of improving the investigation and prosecution of financial crimes.
It states that participants recommended the designation of specialised judges and court personnel to handle corruption cases, noting that the measure could help reduce delays and ensure the speedy resolution of such cases.
They also emphasised the need to strengthen judicial capacity by equipping judges with the necessary skills to interpret and apply existing laws consistently and efficiently.
The participants said the proposed reforms would help improve the administration of justice and strengthen efforts to combat corruption and other economic and financial crimes in the country.
