JUNIOR COMMANDERS ARE EXECUTORS OF OPERATIONAL ORDERS IN THE FIELD – MAJOR GENERAL SD MAKOLO CHARGES NACOLM STUDENTS

The Commandant, Nigerian Army Armour School (NAAS), Major General Sunday Makolo has described Junior commanders as executors of operational orders in the field. He made the remark on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, at 211 Demonstration Battalion Stand during the study tour organized for students of Junior Leadership and Staff Officers’ Course (JLSOC) 6/26 of the Nigerian Army College of Logistics and Management (NACOLM).

The Commandant underscored the importance of the course, particularly in terms of career progression of the student officers. He highlighted the role of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps as the “Combat Arm of Decision,” stressing its combat capabilities, operational effectiveness and professional role in planning, conduct and execution of conventional operations and Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW). He added that the Commander Armour Corps, at any time, is the Chief Adviser to the Chief of Army Staff on all Armour related matters. These, among others, include career planning, training, manpower development of Armour Corps..

The event featured a static display of Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) and ammunition in the
Nigerian Army Armour Corps
inventory as well as a lecture session at the Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya Auditorium. The lecture was delivered by the Commanding Officer, 211 Demonstration Battalion, Lt Col Mohammed Abdulkarim, who provided insights into the roles, organization, and mission of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps.

While delivering his remarks, the Commandant NACOLM, Major General Adewale Adetogba, represented by the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Brigadier General Sylvester Ayongo said the aim of the study tour was to expose students to the vital roles of various Armoured Fighting Vehicles and to combine theory with practical exposure in military training. He noted that such exercises are crucial in building the capacity of future leaders to make informed operational decisions. He commended NAAS for organizing the exercise, describing it as highly relevant to the career development of the students.

The students were also subsequently taken to Victor Kure Armour Range along Bauchi – Jos Road, where they had live fire experience of some Armour tanks.

The exercise ended with an interactive session between the students and instructors’ to enhance their understanding of AFVs and ammunition in the Nigerian Army Armour Corps. A vote of thanks was delivered on behalf of the students by Captain Victor Opara, who expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps for the exceptional hospitality accorded to them. He stated that the students had gained first-hand experience of the combat capabilities and assets of the Corps and would put the knowledge gained to effective use.

Highlights of the event included the live firing demonstration and a group photograph to climax the exercise.
