NEMA Coordinates Response to Gas Plant Fire in Kubwa

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office, coordinated an emergency response operation following a fire outbreak at a gas plant located within a residential area of Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory.

The incident occurred at about 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, with NEMA receiving a distress alert and immediately activating critical response stakeholders, including the Federal Fire Service.

Emergency Response Ambulance Bay (ERAB) teams from Kubwa and AYA were deployed to support the firefighting and emergency response efforts, while the DSAR and DPRF teams provided strategic supervision at the scene.

The fire was successfully extinguished by about 7:45 a.m., after which the affected area was dampened as a precaution against possible secondary explosions.

Preliminary findings indicated that no casualties were recorded. However, a vehicle was burnt beyond recognition, while neighbouring buildings were severely affected by the fire.

The operation was concluded at about 8:45 a.m. Following the response, the DSAR, on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, commended the participating stakeholders for their prompt response and professionalism.

He also urged regulatory authorities and relevant stakeholders to ensure that gas plants are sited in compliance with established safety standards and away from residential areas to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
