PLATEAU NYSC FLAGS OFF LECTURE SERIES, CHARGES CORPS MEMBERS ON SECURITY AWARENESS

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Plateau State, has flagged off the lecture series for the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I Orientation Course, with the State Coordinator, Mr. Jonathan Iliya Yavala, charging Corps Members to remain security-conscious throughout their service year.

The lecture series, held at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, WAYE Foundation, Doi-Du, Jos South Local Government Area, is designed to equip Corps Members with relevant knowledge and skills for a successful Orientation Course and service year.

Speaking at the opening, Yavala congratulated the Corps Members on their successful swearing-in and urged them to take the lectures seriously, noting that the sessions were essential to preparing them for the responsibilities and challenges of national service.

The State Coordinator also inaugurated three Corps Members as Corps Camp Directors: Michael Fortune (PL/26C/0029), Jedidiah Kelechi (PL/26C/0738) and Ola Oluwagbemiga (PL/26C/0020), with Fortune serving as Corps Camp Director for Week One.

He also inaugurated the Camp Court to handle cases involving breaches of the rules and regulations guiding conduct within the Orientation Camp, stressing the importance of discipline and compliance with camp regulations.

Yavala charged the Corps Members to pay attention, take useful notes and ask questions during the lectures before formally declaring the lecture series open.

The opening lecture, titled “Security Awareness,” was delivered by a Security Consultant with Consult Security Limited, Abuja, Mr. Alexander Dalyop, who described security as a shared responsibility.

Dalyop urged the Corps Members to remain vigilant, be conscious of their surroundings and avoid involvement in communal, religious, farmer-herder or other conflicts in their host communities. He also advised them to respect local cultures and sensitivities, including appropriate dressing, and to cultivate positive relationships with members of their host communities.

He further cautioned Corps Members who would serve as electoral ad-hoc personnel to remain security-conscious and avoid actions that could expose them to unnecessary risks.

The Guest Speaker also warned against the misuse of social media through the spread of hate speech, inflammatory content or information capable of creating tension. He advised the Corps Members to avoid unnecessary night journeys, keep their travel plans private, carry valid identification and maintain sufficient airtime on their phones.

Dalyop further encouraged them to socialise only in safe and accessible locations, remain alert and respond appropriately to emergencies.

Reinforcing the message, Yavala reminded the Corps Members that “security begins with you,” urging them to take personal responsibility for their safety and remain responsible and security-conscious throughout their service year.

The lecture series forms part of the NYSC Orientation Course aimed at broadening the Corps Members’ knowledge, promoting discipline and safety, and preparing them for responsible service and positive engagement with their host communities.
