THE PRESIDENT OF THE ECOWAS COMMISSION, H.E. BIRAME DIOP, CALLS FOR RENEWED REGIONAL SOLIDARITY AND STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS TO BUILD A RESILIENT WEST AFRICA

Abuja, 4 September 2026 : The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Birame DIOP, has called for renewed regional solidarity, stronger international partnerships and accelerated integration as West Africa confronts mounting security, economic and geopolitical challenges. Speaking at a high-level engagement with Ambassadors, Heads of Diplomatic Missions, Development Partners and representatives of International Organisations in Abuja on Friday, 4 September 2026, H.E. General DIOP emphasized that regional integration had become an imperative for the future of the West African region.

The engagement, which brought together members of the diplomatic community and development partners alongside the new Management of the ECOWAS Commission, provided an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of sustained international cooperation in advancing the Community’s regional integration agenda. “Regional integration is not merely an option; it is a strategic necessity. It is the most effective pathway towards building a prosperous, resilient and inclusive West Africa,” General DIOP declared.

H.E. DIOP expressed profound appreciation to ECOWAS’ diplomatic and development partners for their longstanding support over the organisation’s 50-year history, noting that their partnership had contributed significantly to progress in peace and security, democratic governance, regional integration, infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance and institutional strengthening. He stressed that ECOWAS is assuming its new chapter against the backdrop of profound global uncertainty, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic fragmentation, climate-related shocks and disruptions to global supply chains. The engagement with the diplomatic community comes as ECOWAS enters a new phase of its institutional development, with the Commission seeking to strengthen the effectiveness and impact of regional cooperation.
