THE PRESIDENT OF THE ECOWAS COMMISSION SIGNS AFRICAN STANDBY FORCE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE AFRICAN UNION AND REGIONAL BLOCS IN EGYPT
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E Général Birame Diop, attended the Fifth Policy Session of I-RECKE (Inter-Regional Knowledge Exchange on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention) held in El Alamein, Egypt on the 3rd of October, 2026, on the margins of the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
As part of the session, President Diop signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the African Union (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) on behalf of the ECOWAS Commission. The objective of the memorandum of Understanding is to provide a framework that clarifies the roles and responsibilities of the AU and RECs/RMs in the preparation, employment, deployment and post-deployment of the African Standby Force (ASF). The arrangement comprises regional standby forces that will be mandated by the AU for Peace Support Operations and in complex emergency situations.
The other signatories to the MoU were the African Union (AU), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), North African Regional Capacity (NARC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
