The Honourable Commissioner for Sports and youth development, Abia State, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, on Wednesday received in audience the victorious Abia State Para-badminton Team following their outstanding performance at the Uganda Para-badminton International 2026 held in Kampala.

The team, which returned to the country with 7 Gold and 3 Silver medals out of 13 medals won by Team Nigeria, was led by officials of the Abia State Badminton Association. Their feat contributed significantly to Nigeria’s total haul of 8 Gold and 5 Silver medals at the tournament.

In his address, the Commissioner commended the athletes for their discipline, resilience and for flying the flag of Abia State high on the international stage. He described their performance as “historic and inspiring,” noting that it has once again put Abia State on the map of para-sports in Africa.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Abia State, I congratulate you for this excellent outing. You have made us proud. The medals you won and the ranking points you gathered in Uganda will go a long way in boosting your world rankings and qualification for world-stage competitions,” the Commissioner said.

He further pledged to formally present the team to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti OFR, in recognition of the Governor’s support in sponsoring the team’s participation in Uganda.

“We will arrange a proper reception and presentation to His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, who made this trip possible. The Governor believes in sports development and in the ability of our athletes, both able-bodied and para-athletes, to excel,” he added.

The team, in their response, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his magnanimity and to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports for his leadership and constant support as well as the Director of Sports, Abia State Sports Council, Comrade Obioma George, for his commitment to the growth of the team.

Gold medalists for Abia include Ijeoma Gift Chukwuemeka, Lyka Brown, Obioma Precious Nwosu, Nnanna Chigozie Jeremiah, Elijah Eneojo Agada, Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri, and the doubles pairs of Nnanna C.
