COAS PRIORITISES TROOPS’ WELFARE, UNVEILS ARMY MEDICAL CORPS HEADQUARTERS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel and their families, declaring that comprehensive and quality healthcare remains fundamental to troop morale, operational readiness and the effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

General Shaibu stated this on Thursday, 29 October 2026, while unveiling the newly constructed Headquarters, Nigerian Army Medical Corps, at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja. He charged the Corps to continually improve healthcare delivery to officers, soldiers, their families and members of the barracks communities.

The COAS emphasised that investing in extensive healthcare services goes beyond treating illnesses, noting that the physical well-being of personnel and their families is essential to maintaining a healthy, motivated and combat-ready force. He stressed that access to responsive and quality medical services would not only enhance operational effectiveness but also provide soldiers with the confidence that their well-being and that of their loved ones remain a priority.

He commended the Nigerian Army Medical Corps for its dedication to providing medical support during military operations, routine healthcare services and humanitarian interventions across the country. He noted that the newly unveiled headquarters would strengthen administrative coordination, improve the delivery of medical services and provide a conducive environment for the Corps to discharge its responsibilities more efficiently.

General Shaibu urged the Corps to maximise the opportunities provided by the new facility to promote innovation, professionalism and responsive healthcare services, in keeping with his Command Philosophy of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which places the welfare of personnel at the centre of military leadership.

Earlier, the Corps Commander Medical, Brigadier General Innocent Ewunchola, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his visionary leadership and sustained investment in medical infrastructure. He assured that the Corps would remain committed to providing efficient, accessible and quality healthcare to all eligible beneficiaries while ensuring the proper maintenance and effective utilisation of the facility.
