HIRE-PURCHASE DEAL TURNS TO STEALING BY CONVERSION AS OYO POLICE ARREST SUSPECT, RECOVER MOTORCYCLE

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested one Omoola Afeez Kehinde, aged 29, in connection with a case of stealing by conversion involving a TVS motorcycle valued at ₦2,550,000.00. The arrest followed an investigation into a hire-purchase transaction in which the suspect allegedly converted the motorcycle without fulfilling the agreed payment obligations.

According to the complaint, on 2 August 2025, the suspect collected the motorcycle under a hire-purchase arrangement, with an agreement to pay for it in monthly instalments. However, after taking possession of the motorcycle, the suspect disappeared, failed to make any payment and remained incommunicado until his arrest on 23 October 2026. Following unsuccessful attempts to reach him, the complainant petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, seeking police intervention. In response, the Commissioner of Police assigned the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to investigate the matter.

Pursuant to the directive, operatives of the VCRU commenced an intelligence-driven investigation which led them to Ondo town, Ondo State, where the suspect was arrested on 23 October 2026. The operation also resulted in the recovery of the TVS motorcycle, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he had no intention of paying for the motorcycle from the outset. He further admitted that immediately after taking possession of the motorcycle, he left Oyo State with the intention of converting it to his personal property, believing that he would not be traced. He also disclosed that he had since been using the motorcycle for commercial activities.

Following his arrest and the recovery of the motorcycle, the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, preparatory to his arraignment before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, reiterates the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and urges members of the public to exercise due diligence in commercial transactions, honour contractual agreements and promptly report suspected criminal activities to the police.
