The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, has formally launched the Enugu State Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), describing it as a timely and strategic initiative to strengthen intelligence-driven policing, prevent violent crime and protect lives and property.

Represented by AIG Miller Gajere Dantawaye, psc, in charge of Zone 13, the IGP charged VCRU personnel to uphold professionalism, discipline, accountability and respect for human rights. He commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for providing vehicular logistics and supporting security infrastructure across the state.

Presenting the Unit’s scorecard since its establishment in April 2026, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, disclosed that the VCRU had arrested 182 suspects for offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, cultism, and drug and substance trafficking, many of whom have been prosecuted. The Unit also rescued 31 kidnapping victims and recovered 57 firearms, including 13 AK-47 rifles, 669 rounds of assorted live ammunition, 44 vehicles comprising motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, and other incriminating exhibits.

CP Giwa explained that the VCRU comprises specialised sub-sections responsible for armed robbery, terrorism and related offences; kidnapping; cultism and drugs trafficking; and operational monitoring, professional conduct oversight and media liaison.
