POLICE INVESTIGATE VIRAL VIDEO INVOLVING VCRU OPERATIVES, CALABAR MUNICIPALITY CHAIRMAN

The Cross River State Police Command is aware of a video currently circulating on social media concerning an alleged altercation involving operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and the Chairman of Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, Apostle (Rt. Hon.) James Koko Anam, at an undisclosed stop-and-search point within the Calabar metropolis.

2. Preliminary information available to the Command indicates that the incident occurred approximately three weeks ago during a stop-and-search operation. The Command, however, emphasises that the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been fully established.
3. Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, psc, mnips, mspsp, has directed a discreet and impartial investigation to establish the facts, circumstances and conduct of all persons involved.
4. In furtherance of the investigation, the Command has commenced the process of inviting Apostle (Rt. Hon.) James Koko Anam, Chairman, Calabar Municipality Local Government Council, as well as the concerned VCRU operatives, to provide their respective accounts of the incident.
5. The Command assures the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally and objectively, with due regard to the rights of all parties. Any allegation of misconduct established in the course of the investigation will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws and police regulations.
6. The Command therefore urges members of the public to refrain from drawing conclusions from the circulating video, which may not contain the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and to allow the investigation to run its course.
