FCT POLICE COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 WITH POLICE–YOUTH DIALOGUE ON SECURITY

The FCT Police Command, on Saturday, 22nd August, 2026, joined the global community in commemorating International Youth Day 2026 with a Police–Youth Dialogue on Security held at Garki Primary School, Lagos Street, Abuja, under the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” The event brought together Senior Police Officers of the FCT Police Command, His Royal Highness, the Sa’peyi of Garki, Alhaji Dr. Usman Nga Kupi, youths, community members, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), representatives of POCACOV, and other stakeholders, to foster meaningful engagement on youth development, responsible citizenship and the collective role of young people in building safer communities.

Addressing the gathering, the CP, FCT Command, emphasized the critical role of young Nigerians in the development and security of the nation, urging them to remain productive, law-abiding and committed to the progress of Nigeria. The CP admonished the youths to shun drug abuse, criminality and other activities capable of undermining their future and the peace of society. He further charged them to uphold the values of discipline, patriotism and service, encapsulating his message in three guiding phrases: “Death before dishonour; Service before self; Nigeria first.”

As part of the activities marking the occasion, the CP, FCT Command, conferred Mr. Joshua Chukwuma (AKA MC Miti) and Mr. Dantani Tanko with appointment plaques as Police – Youth Ambassadors. While presenting the plaques, the CP charged the newly appointed Ambassadors to uphold the values of integrity, patriotism and responsible leadership, and to serve as positive bridges between the Police and the youth by promoting constructive dialogue, discouraging crime and drug abuse, and encouraging young people to contribute meaningfully to the peace, security and development of their communities.

Also speaking during the event, the Sa’peyi of Garki, His Royal Highness Alhaji Dr. Usman Nga Kupi, called on the youths to shun drug abuse, political violence and other forms of criminality, particularly cautioning them against allowing themselves to be used by politicians or other individuals to cause violence and disrupt public peace. He urged the youths to remain vigilant and responsible, especially as election periods approach, and to channel their energy towards productive ventures that contribute positively to their communities and the nation.

Members of the National Youth Service Corps who participated in the programme also engaged in the discussions, highlighting the importance of patriotism, service to the nation and collective responsibility. Their contributions reinforced the message that national development and security are shared responsibilities requiring the active participation of all citizens. The Police – Youth Dialogue further provided an avenue for frank and constructive interaction on issues affecting young people and national security, including drug abuse, crime prevention, responsible citizenship, community safety and the need for stronger trust and communication between the Police and the youth.

The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with young people and other community stakeholders in promoting peace, security and responsible citizenship across the Federal Capital Territory. The Command therefore calls on youths to reject criminal associations, embrace productive opportunities and remain committed to the peace, unity and development of Nigeria, while urging parents, traditional institutions, community leaders and youth organizations to continue supporting initiatives that promote positive youth development and constructive Police – community partnerships.
