Shaibu: Tinubu’s Re-election Not a Cause for Concern, Current Sacrifices Will Yield Lasting Benefits

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political strength, saying the President’s re-election prospects are not something his supporters are worried about.

Shaibu made the remarks shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State during the Local Government Council Election held on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

According to him, President Tinubu’s political experience, foresight and resilience have continued to distinguish him as one of Nigeria’s most strategic political leaders.

“The election is nothing to worry about; it is like a feast for us. When you have a Jagaban who plans ahead, everything becomes easier. What we are witnessing now is just the beginning,” he said.

Shaibu recalled how President Tinubu weathered intense political challenges during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State and also overcame internal political obstacles ahead of the 2023 general election.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is a national politician who understands the game. He has consistently demonstrated his ability to overcome political challenges,” he stated.

He noted that the President’s first term is focused on laying a solid foundation that will guarantee sustainable development and consolidate achievements in a second term.

Addressing the current economic situation, Shaibu acknowledged that Nigerians have faced difficult times but maintained that the reforms being implemented would ultimately produce positive results.

“When this administration came on board, many people complained about the high cost of commodities. Gradually, we are beginning to see improvements. Nation-building requires making difficult decisions that may not be popular today but will benefit the country in the future,” he said.

Drawing a comparison with President Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State, Shaibu said many of the difficult decisions taken then, including widespread demolitions for infrastructure development, initially attracted criticism but later transformed Lagos into Nigeria’s commercial hub.

“When President Tinubu started rebuilding Lagos, many people complained about the demolitions. Today, Lagos is rightly regarded as the Centre of Excellence. Whatever we are going through now will not last forever. As the Scripture says, ‘Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning,'” he added.
