ABIA POLICE COMMAND COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY WITH WALKATHON CALLS FOR A UNITED STAND AGAINST POLITICAL AND DIGITAL THUGGERY
1. In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, the Abia State Police Command today, 20/08/2026, commemorated the 2026 International Youth Day under the National Youth and Security Initiative themed *“Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc(+), mnips, JP, led members of his management team and officers of the Command at the forefront of the activities, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, the Special Adviser on Youths, and various youth groups in the state, including the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Niger Delta Students Union Government, National Association of Students Union, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), New Face of Igbo Youths Association, and Ohaneze Youths Movement, among others.
2. The event commenced with a walkathon at 0800hrs, which converged at Okpara Square, Umuahia, and proceeded back to the State Headquarters. The exercise was aimed at promoting physical fitness, strengthening police-youth partnership, and encouraging the active participation of youths we jointly *say NO to political and digital thuggery, crime, criminality, and insecurity,* while promoting civic responsibility, community policing, and security consciousness in line with the IGP’s vision.
3. Addressing participants after the exercise, CP Afolabi appreciated everyone who took part and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining a positive and constructive relationship with the youths in Abia State. He encouraged young people to see the Police as partners and assured them that the Police is not against them.
He further cautioned against political /digital thuggery and other social vices, urging youths to channel their energy into productive activities. He further encouraged physical fitness activities to keep fit and suggesting a Police-Youth walkathon every last Saturday of the month, which was welcomed by all.
4. The programme continues today at 2:00 p.m. at the Police Officers’ Mess, Umuahia, opposite Damgrate Hotel, where other activities have been lined up to mark the 2026 International Youth Day in Abia State.
