IMO POLICE DETAIN FOUR OFFICERS OVER VIRAL ARREST VIDEO IN NEKEDE

The Imo State Police Command has condemned the actions of four security personnel seen in a viral video allegedly forcing a young man into the boot of a vehicle along Human Race Road, Nekede.

According to the Command, the incident happened on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m. Following the circulation of the video online, the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, ordered an immediate investigation to identify those involved and determine what transpired.

Initial findings revealed that the officers involved were two police officers attached to the Nekede Divisional Headquarters and two Supernumerary Police Officers. They were reportedly carrying out an operation at a location suspected to be linked to drug trafficking, where two suspects were arrested. Police said substances believed to be Cannabis Sativa were recovered from one of the suspects, who allegedly admitted to selling illegal drugs in the area.

Despite the arrests and recovery made during the operation, the Imo State Police Command described the officers’ conduct in the viral video as unacceptable, inhumane, and contrary to the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures, Code of Conduct, and professional ethics.

As a result, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate detention of the four officers while the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation. Disciplinary proceedings have also begun, and the Command says the outcome of the investigation will be made public.

The Police Command reiterated its commitment to fighting crime while ensuring that all operations are carried out professionally, lawfully, and with full respect for the rights and dignity of every citizen.
