Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has transformed the 85-year-old school at Ikpe Mbak Eyop in Obot Akara Local Government Area into an ultra-modern Model Primary School, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in the future of Akwa Ibom children and strengthening human capital development across the State.

Representing the Governor at the commissioning ceremony on Monday, September 7, 2026, former Commissioner for Youth and Sports and Dean of Commissioners, Sir Monday Uko, said he was particularly proud to witness the transformation, having attended Primary Six at the school in 1980.

Sir Uko commended Governor Eno for transforming the former community school into a modern learning facility, noting that the project represented a strategic investment in the future of the State.

He said the school was capable of producing future governors, legislators, doctors, engineers and other professionals, stressing that investments in education were investments in the future of Akwa Ibom.

Sir Uko disclosed that Obot Akara had received two Model Primary Schools within the year, in addition to other projects and appointments, making it the only local government area to have recorded such a feat so far.

Giving an overview of the project, Prof. Umoh said the school exemplified Governor Eno’s innovative approach to governance and the implementation of the ARISE Agenda.

He traced the history of the institution to the Methodist Mission, which established a church in the area in 1933 and the school in 1939, making the institution approximately 85 years old.

According to him, the historic school has now been transformed into a modern educational facility comprising 17 fully furnished classrooms, additional classroom facilities, an ICT centre and a library. The school is also equipped with solar-powered infrastructure to provide electricity.

The Commissioner said the project included furnished residential accommodation for teachers and the head teacher, equipped with essential household facilities, as well as perimeter fencing, a gate and security facilities.

He added that the school’s layout incorporated green areas alongside the built-up sections, providing a conducive and aesthetically pleasing environment for learning.

Prof. Umoh further stated that the State Government’s free and compulsory education policy provides pupils with exercise books, school bags, shoes, socks and uniforms, thereby removing financial barriers to education and contributing to increased enrolment ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session.

Welcoming the dignitaries, the Chairman of Obot Akara Local Government Area, Hon. Simon Akpan, described the commissioning as another landmark event in the area.

He lauded Governor Eno for his frequent visits to the local government and highlighted the 20 projects implemented in the area under the administration.

Hon. Akpan pledged the mobilisation of residents to support Governor Eno, the President, the Senate President and other APC candidates in the 2027 elections.

In separate goodwill messages, the first elected female Chairman of Obot Akara, Mrs. Agnes Ewewen; former House of Representatives member and Founder of Rafia City Book Club, Abom Tony Esu; Member, Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Hon. Patrick Umoh; and Member, Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency, Hon. Jerry Otu, applauded the Governor’s efforts and pledged their continued support for his administration.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by members of the State Executive Council and other government officials, Local Government Council Chairmen, lawmakers, traditional and religious leaders, political appointees and other stakeholders from Obot Akara and across the State.

The event featured the formal commissioning of the school and a welcome song performed by the pupils.
