FG inaugurates Independent Committee to probe 37 deaths in NSCDC Custody

The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, today inaugurated a 10-member Independent Investigative Committee, constituted on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to investigate the reported deaths of 37 people in NSCDC custody in Niger State.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister charged the Committee to operate independently and without interference, stressing that justice remains the greatest responsibility owed to the deceased and their families.

The Committee is mandated to establish the identities of the deceased; investigate the circumstances of their arrest and detention; determine the cause and manner of death through appropriate medical and forensic examinations; establish whether negligence, misconduct, complicity or breaches of duty occurred; and recommend appropriate disciplinary action, compensation where applicable, and measures to prevent recurrence.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo directed the NSCDC leadership and relevant officers to cooperate fully and preserve all records and evidence connected to the incident. He warned that any attempt to destroy or conceal evidence, intimidate witnesses or obstruct the investigation would be treated as a serious offence.

“We owe you the truth. This committee will give you the truth. No officer, no matter how highly placed, will be shielded if found culpable,” the Minister assured Nigerians.

The Committee, chaired by Mr Jonathan Kure (Rtd.), is expected to commence work immediately and submit its report within two weeks.
